Medieval Architecture

 

English Tudor

This style based on a variety of Medieval English building traditions that from simple thatch-roofed folk cottages to grand manor houses in style.  Basic style elements can include:

  • Roofs that are steeply pitched
  • Picturesque structures
  • Tall, narrow windows that are usually placed in groups
  • Facades with half-timbering for decorative purposes
  • Combinations of materials

Germanic Cottages

Basically Tudor-form residences with a Continental influence.  In addition to other elements of medieval styles, Germanic Cottages have details that include:

  • Steeply pitched roofs
  • Clipped or jerkin-headed gables
  • Facades that are irregular or asymmetrical
  • Low eave lines

French Eclectic

This style shows great variety in form and detailing because of the influence of many centuries of French domestic building.  It looks very similar to the English Tudor Revival style mostly because of the shared histories of these countries.  In general, elements of the style include:

  • Tall and very steeply pitched hipped roofs.
  • Shallow eaves
  • Arched windows
  • Dormers or doors with surrounds or pilasters
  • Structures and forms are usually crisp
